The alternative and there is a lot of it about, is that in many organisations, we have either unwittingly, or through some misguided view that it was a good idea, allowed too much individualisation to emerge. In some instances we have encouraged, and even rewarded, internal competition and rivalry to be valued and seen as portents of a strong organisation culture. We often have turned a blind eye to narcissistic and self-serving behaviour because we somehow felt when measured against a person’s ‘hard skills’ it was worth the sacrifice.

What history tells us is that those organisations who focus on the individuals and the near time horizon will reap only short-term benefits, usually only of a monetary nature (and often excluding long term-term brand and shareholder value) and in fact are likely, despite their limited profit and loss success from time to time, to continue to repeat the mistakes of previous generations and to in many instances go to the wall.
